With the T20 World Cup looming on the horizon, the Indian cricket team management once again found itself in a problem of plenty. Ahead of the 18-member India squad selection for the marquee event in June, set to be held in the USA and West Indies, the inclusion of dynamic wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson is garnering a lot of attention.
As the senior selection committee, spearheaded by Ajit Agarkar, convenes in Ahmedabad on Tuesday (April 30) to finalise the roster, the spotlight shines brightly on whether Samson, the Rajasthan Royals captain in the ongoing IPL 2024, will find a spot or not.

Amidst the deliberations, a crucial aspect emerges - the Indian team management's insistence on a wicketkeeper who can slot into the lower-order, given the top-heavy batting line-up. According to the Indian Express, this preference casts a shadow of uncertainty over Samson's inclusion, despite his undeniable talent and recent form.
While Rishabh Pant - who has announced his arrival at the big stage with a terrific show in the IPL 2024 for his franchise Delhi Capitals - is a front-runner for the wicketkeeping slots.
The battle for the other spot intensifies between Samson and KL Rahul. Despite Rahul's impressive IPL run, the team's strategic alignment, led by Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Virat Kohli in the top order, steers the decision away from accommodating another top-order batsman.
Samson's case is particularly intriguing, given his evolution as a T20 powerhouse. Accumulating 385 runs in the ongoing IPL season at a strike rate of 161.09, the Kerala cricketer has showcased consistency and maturity previously sporadically seen in his game. His ability to handle spin bowling adeptly and his versatility in batting order make him a valuable asset for India, especially in the middle-order.
However, the conundrum persists as India's batting hierarchy seems to have limited slots for specialists in the middle-order. With the top four likely occupied by Rohit, Jaiswal, Kohli, and Suryakumar Yadav, the team management prioritises specialists for the remaining positions.
In the midst of these deliberations, names like Dhruv Jurel and Jitesh Sharma resurface, adding complexity to the selection process. Despite their subdued IPL performances, their prior involvement with the national T20 setup and occasional displays of promise make them contenders for the squad.
Jurel's impressive showing in the Test series against England and Jitesh's consistent presence in the T20 setup over the last year provide selectors with alternative options, albeit with lesser IPL fireworks.
