Mirabai Chanu, born on 8 August 1994 in Nongpok Kakching, Manipur, is a prominent Indian weightlifter. She competes in the Women's 49kg category and has represented India in multiple international events. Her journey in weightlifting began in 2008 at the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal.

Mirabai's Olympic journey started at Rio 2016, where she placed sixth in the snatch but failed in the clean and jerk. She redeemed herself at Tokyo 2020, winning a silver medal with a total lift of 202kg in the Women's 49kg category. This was the highest Olympic finish for an Indian weightlifter.
Mirabai has won back-to-back Commonwealth Games titles in the 49kg category. In 2018, she won by a margin of 26kg, and in 2022, she broke three of her own Games records with a total lift of 201kg.
In 2017, Mirabai became the world champion in the 48kg category, winning India's first world championships gold since Karnam Malleswari in 1995. She also claimed overall silver in the 2022 World Championships.
A lower back injury forced Mirabai to miss the 2018 Asian Games. She sought treatment in the United States under physiotherapist Aaron Horschig. "I have improved a lot under his guidance," she said, noting that his exercises focus on the overall body.
Mirabai's family includes her father Saikhom Kriti Meitei, mother Saikhom Ongbi Tombi Leima, four sisters, and two brothers. She speaks English and is coached by Vijay Sharma at the national level.
Mirabai has received several awards, including the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award (2018), Padma Shri Award (2018), and Indian Sportswoman of the Year (2021, 2022). She was also promoted to Additional Superintendent of Police (Sports) within the Manipur Police Department after her success at Tokyo 2020.
