Kumar made his international debut in 2003 at the Asian Championships held in New Delhi, India. Competing for India, he quickly established himself as a formidable wrestler. His dedication and skill earned him numerous accolades over the years.

In 2011, Kumar was honoured with the Padam Shri Award. He also received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in 2009, India's highest honour for sportsmen. Additionally, he won the Arjuna Award in 2006, which is India's second highest national sports award.

Kumar became the first freestyle wrestler from India to win three gold medals at the Commonwealth Games. He achieved this feat by winning in the 74kg category at the 2018 Games in Gold Coast, Australia. Previously, he had won gold medals in the 66kg category at the 2010 Games in Delhi and in the 74kg category at the 2014 Games in Glasgow.

In another significant achievement, Kumar became the first Indian wrestler to win gold at the World Championships. He claimed victory in the 66kg category at the 2010 edition held in Moscow, Russia.
