Vijay Kumar Biography

In 2003, Vijay was transferred to the Army Marksmanship Unit to train professionally under Russian coach Pavel Smirnov. His senior officers noticed his shooting skills during army training and encouraged him to pursue the sport. Competing for Himachal Pradesh, India, Vijay is right-handed and made his international debut in 2005.

Memorable Achievements

Vijay's most memorable sporting achievement came at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, where he won a silver medal in the 25m rapid fire pistol event. This victory made him the first pistol shooter representing India to win an Olympic medal. His parents have been the most influential people in his career.

Challenges and Injuries

Vijay faced several challenges throughout his career. Six weeks before the 2012 Olympics, he injured his right shoulder during training, which continued to affect him into 2013. Additionally, a case of chicken pox prevented him from competing at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Vijay has received numerous awards and honours. He was the flag bearer for India at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. In 2013, he was honoured with the Padmashree Award. He also won the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2012 and the Arjuna Award in 2006.

After missing out on a spot for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Vijay left the national team. In 2017, he retired from the Indian Army to pursue his studies and later joined the Indian Police. Future Ambitions

Vijay's primary goal is to compete at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. He has no plans of quitting the sport for at least the next ten years and would love to be a coach later in his career. His return to shooting after a four-year hiatus was marked by securing fourth position at a national event in November 2021.
