  • Australia have lost just one of their last 30 men's Tests against New Zealand (W22, D7); they won the second Test of this series by 247 runs, they will now be looking to secure only their second 3-0 clean sweep over the Black Caps in a three-Test series (March/April 2000 in New Zealand).
  • This will be the third men's Test between Australia and New Zealand at the Sydney Cricket Ground and first since November 1985; the first two encounters resulted in a draw (January 1974) and a four-wicket win to Australia (November 1985) respectively.
  • New Zealand will be looking to avoid a 3-0 defeat in a men's Test series (3 matches) for the first time since September-October 2016 (in India), one of only two such series defeats they've endured since 2001 (in England, 2004).
  • Australia finished the previous decade (2010-2019) with 57 wins in men's Test cricket (D17, L38), the joint-most victories of any nation in that time (also England).
  • New Zealand have won five of their last six opening men's Test matches of a calendar year (L1), their lone defeat in that span coming against Australia by an innings and 52 runs (2016).
  • Australia have lost only one of their last 18 men's Tests at the Sydney Cricket Ground (W13, D4), that lone defeat coming against England by an innings and 83 runs (January 2011).
  • Nathan Lyon (Australia) bowled the most dot balls (2,298) of any bowler in men's Test cricket in 2019, over 1,000 more than the next best by a spinner (India's Ravindra Jadeja - 1,204).
  • Australia's Steve Smith had the highest Test batting average of any man to record 20+ innings during the previous decade (2010-2019); recording a rate of 62.8 across his 130 innings.
  • Kane Williamson and Tom Latham have been responsible for 15.1% and 15% of New Zealand's Test runs respectively since the star of 2017, only Virat Kohli (16.8%) has managed a higher share of his side's runs in that time (excludes Ireland and Afghanistan).
  • Neil Wagner (201) became the second-fastest New Zealand bowler to 200 wickets in men's Test cricket history last time out, only Sir Richard Hadlee (44) reached the mark in fewer matches than Wagner (46).
