  • The only previous completed men's T20I between New Zealand and Afghanistan took place at the 2021 T20 World Cup in Abu Dhabi with the Black Caps winning by eight wickets with 11 balls remaining thanks largely to an unbeaten 68-run partnership between Devon Conway and Kane Williamson in the New Zealand chase.
  • New Zealand have won only two of their last eight men's T20Is after winning five in a row prior to that stretch; though, all their 13 games in the format so far in 2024 have been against either Pakistan (x10) or Australia (x3).
  • New Zealand have begun seven of their previous eight ICC Men's T20 World Cup campaigns with a win in their first game of the tournament with a five-wicket loss to Pakistan in their first game of the 2021 edition their only false start in that stretch.
  • Afghanistan have won their last three consecutive men's T20Is including a 125-run win against Uganda in their opening match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024; the last time they won more consecutive games in the format was a four-game streak from March to June in 2022.
  • Afghanistan will be looking to open an ICC Men's T20 World Cup campaign with back-to-back wins for just the second time and the first time since they won their first three games of the 2016 campaign; in fact, their 125-run win over Uganda in their first game of this tournament snapped a five-game losing streak at the tournament for Afghanistan.
  • New Zealand have scored 60+ runs during the power play in each of their last two men's T20Is – losing only a single wicket in each of those power plays – which is as many times as they had reached 60 power play runs in their previous nine innings in the format.
  • Lockie Ferguson (New Zealand) has taken at least one wicket in each of his five T20I innings in 2024, taking 10 wickets in total this year, including figures of 4/12 against Australia in his last match (February 2024) which was just his third four-wicket haul in the format and first since July 2022.
  • Najibullah Zadran (Afghanistan) scored 73 runs in the only previous completed men's T20I between New Zealand and Afghanistan, the highest of any player in that game and the highest of his career in the format against any team; though, he's been dismissed for fewer than 10 runs in each of his last four innings overall.
  • Kane Williamson (New Zealand) has a batting average of 58.2 across his last six T20I innings, a span which includes three half-centuries; in fact, he has scored 40+ runs in each of his last three games at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup and has scored more total runs at the tournament than any other Black Caps player (699).
  • Rahmanullah Gurbaz (Afghanistan) made a good connection on 73% of his 45 balls faced against Uganda in his side's first game of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, the highest of any player from either side to face more than two deliveries.
