Abdul Samad is an Indian cricketer who plays for Jammu & Kashmir in domestic cricket and plays for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League. He is the third ever cricketer from Jammu & Kashmir to feature in the IPL and became a household name thanks to his big-hitting prowess.
Samad is an aggressive right-handed batsman who can play big shots. He is also pretty useful with the ball and is a right-arm leg-break bowler.
He was born in Kalakote, J&K on 28 October 2001 and is regarded as one of the finest young talents in Indian cricket right now. The all-rounder is just 21 years of age at the time of IPL 2023.
Irfan Pathan, the player-cum-mentor of J&K had spotted Samad at the Science College Ground in Jammu during a camp organized for the state Ranji Trophy team and he has not looked back since.
The youngster hails from a middle-class family. His father Farooq is a physical-education instructor with a government school in Jammu, and Samad's mother is a home-maker. His older brother Tayyab, once a cricketer himself, is currently pursuing a master's in physical education from the University of Nagpur.
Samad made his Twenty20 debut for Jammu & Kashmir in the 2018–19 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on 21 February 2019. He made his List A debut on 27 September 2019, in the 2019–20 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He made his first-class debut on 9 December 2019 in the Ranji Trophy.
Samad was signed by the Sunrisers Hyderabad for the 2020 season and made his IPL debut on 29 September 2020, against the Delhi Capitals.
In the IPL Auction 2023, the Hyderabad franchise acquired the services of Abdul Samad for Rs 4 Crore.
