Born on 8th September 1990 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu Murugan Ashwin is a leg-break bowler who plays for Rajasthan Royals in Indian Premier League. Murugan is known for his ability to break down partnerships in the middle order.
The top Twenty20 domestic event in India, the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament, was where he made his breakout performance in 2015–16. However, he only earned an Indian Premier League contract in 2018 when Rising Pune Super Giants signed him in 2016.
He was the biggest gainer in the 2016 IPL auction after he was roped in for Rs. 4.5 crores from the base price of Rs. 10 lakhs. He put up a respectable performance, taking seven wickets, and establishing himself as a spinner to keep an eye on.
However, since then his journey has not been stable. He has not been part of the regular XI in any of the sides over the years. After leaving Pune Super Giants he signed for Delhi Daredevils where he didn't get many chances.
In 2018, he was bought for Rs. 2.2 crore by Royal Challengers Bangalore in the auction. He was released a year later and was picked up by Kings XI Punjab for Rs. 20 lakhs in 2019. After three seasons in Punjab, he was signed by Mumbai Indians in 2022.
Ahead of the 2023 season, he was snapped up by Rajasthan Royals in the mini-auction for his base price of ₹20 lakh. Murugan Ashwin is married to Aishwarya Subramaniam and is blessed with two daughters. His father Era Murukan Ramasamy is a well-known Tamil writer and Vice President of HCL Technologies.
The Tamil Nadu leg-spinner academically is also brilliant. He was already going through a bright career, pursuing with GRE and lucrative job offers in the USA but he chose to continue with cricket out of passion.
