Born on December 16, 1995, Spencer Henry Johnson has quickly risen through the ranks to become one of the most talked-about pacers in Australian cricket. Representing South Australia domestically, Johnson proved his mettle as a formidable left-arm fast bowler.
Johnson made an impactful debut in List A cricket on October 12, 2017, playing for South Australia against Victoria. His talent was evident from the start, but it was his first-class debut on February 20, 2023, that truly highlighted his potential. During the 2022–23 Sheffield Shield season, Johnson brought the best out of himself when he chipped in with impressive figures of 6/87 against Victoria and bettered that performance in his next game with 7/47 against Queensland.
Initially named in the Adelaide Strikers squad for the 2020-21 BBL season, Johnson didn’t get a game until the 2022-23 season when he made his debut for the Brisbane Heat. He played ten matches in the tournament including the final, and earned a reputation as a reliable death bowler. His performances were crucial in leading his team to victory in the 2023-2024 BBL season final.
His bowling prowess soon caught the eyes of national selectors. In March 2023, he was named in the Australia A squad for a tour of New Zealand, a precursor to the iconic Ashes series. There, he impressed with bowling figures of 4/53 in his first match at Lincoln. By August, he earned a spot in Australia’s T20I squad for the series against South Africa, making his international debut with a pretty decent bowling spell of 2/33 in a convincing 111-run win.
In 2024, Johnson continued his international journey, participating in Australia’s T20 series against the West Indies where he showcased his skill with a solid performance of 2 wickets for 39 runs in the second match. Spencer Johnson registered his name in the IPL 2024 auction with a base price of INR 50 lakh. Interestingly, Gujarat Titans acquired the services of the paceman for INR 10 crore in the wake of a fierce bidding war.
