Swapnil Singh, a seasoned left-arm orthodox spinner, has carved his niche in Indian domestic cricket, representing Baroda domestically. Born on January 22, 1991, Swapnil embarked on his cricketing journey at a remarkably young age, making his first-class debut in 2006, just days before his 15th birthday. His early foray into the T20 arena came in 2007 during the Inter-State Twenty-20 Tournament, showcasing his potential as a versatile spinner.
Despite missing out on selection for the India U19 squad for the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in 2008, Swapnil's talent and dedication to the game remained undeterred. His early stint with the Mumbai Indians in the inaugural IPL season provided valuable exposure, although he didn't feature in any matches.
The turning point in Swapnil's career came during the 2014-15 Ranji Trophy season, where he began to assert his presence in the domestic circuit. His breakthrough performance came in a 2015 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he claimed six wickets for 19 runs. That performance catapulted him to limelight, garnering attention from IPL franchises and selectors alike. Consequently, he earned a contract with Punjab Kings for the 2016 IPL season.
Although his stint with Punjab Kings was brief, Swapnil continued to toil hard in domestic cricket, honing his skills and showcasing his prowess with both bat and ball for Baroda. His standout performance in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy, where he emerged as the leading run-scorer for Baroda with an impressive tally of 565 runs in six matches, underscored his burgeoning talent as a genuine all-rounder.
In 2018, Swapnil earned a call-up to the India Blue squad for the Duleep Trophy, further solidifying his credentials as a promising prospect in Indian cricket. His subsequent move to Uttarakhand for the 2021–22 domestic season marked a new chapter in his career, where he continued to excel in the domestic circuit.
Swapnil's recent strides in the shortest format of the game caught the attention of franchise scouts, leading to his recruitment by the Lucknow franchise for the 2023 Indian T20 League. Despite limited opportunities, his potential was evident in the opportunities he received. Swapnil was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore ahead of IPL 2024.
