Volgograd, June 25: A last-gasp winner from Salem Al Dawsari helped Saudi Arabia stun Egypt 2-1 in the final Group A encounter of the 2018 FIFA World Cup at Russia's Volgograd Arena.

The match looked all set for an uninspiring draw when the Villarreal striker netted the winner for the Green Falcons with a cool right-footed volley past Egyptian custodian Essam Al Hadary, who created history by becoming the oldest player in World Cup .

Meanwhile Hadary became the oldest player in World Cup history as he lined up for Egypt.

The goalkeeper appeared five times in qualifying and, at 45 years and 161 days old, takes the record from Faryd Mondragon, who appeared in goal for Colombia in 2014 just three days after his 43rd birthday.

Both teams had already been eliminated from Russia 2018 and the only thing they were trying to salvage in the Volgograd Arena was the chance not to finish bottom of their group.

Salem's goal ensured that Saudi finished third in the pool on three points, while Egypt returned home without a point to show for their efforts.

El Hadary had earlier looked like claiming the spotlight after saving a first-half penalty from Fahad Al Muwallad.

No sooner had the veteran goalkeeper finished celebrating and he was facing another spot-kick, this time given after the lightest of shirt tugs by Ali Gabr on Al Muwallad.

Referee Wilmar Roldan was encouraged to review the decision by VAR, but the Colombian stood by his initial call giving Salam Al Faraj the chance - after a three-minute delay - to drill past El Hadary and pull his side level deep into first-half stoppage time.

Salah - whose international future has been the subject of intense speculation this week - had earlier opened the scoring for Egypt with a fine finish, but Hector Cuper's men finished empty handed thanks to Salem's last-gasp effort

In the end, it was a bitter disappointment for the Egyptian side, however, with Liverpool striker Salah unable to prevent three consecutive defeats for his country as Salem ensured his side's campaign finished on a high with the stunning winner past El Hadary in the closing stages.
