M S Dhoni turns out highest tax payer in Bihar

Patna, Mar 14: With Team India Captain M S Dhoni becoming the highest individual Income tax payer in the current fiscal(2007-08), the Bihar and Jharkhand region has registered the highest growth in Corporate tax collection in the country.

This was informed here today by Chief Income Tax Commissioner, Bihar and Jharkhand, S K Sinha while speaking to newspersons about the region's stupendous success in terms of tax collection during the current fiscal vis-a-vis last year.He said following sustained efforts a total amount of Rs 2,034 crores had so far been collected as direct and indirect tax revenues from both corporates and individual assesses since April 2007, thereby recording over 100 per cent growth only in corporate tax collection here in just one year time.

Quoting official figures about the overall performance of the Bihar-Jharkhand Income Tax department during the current financial year in accordance with the latest directives of the Centre, Dr Sinha said after overshooting last year's target of Rs 1,879.10 crores by Rs 155.10 crores, the region had been given a fresh collection target of Rs 2,746.47 crores during this year.

''We are all set to cross this target too before March 31 this year'',Dr Sinha emphasised.

He said though the department was yet to finalise the list of highest tax payers and largest defaulters in both corporate and individual tax assesses in Bihar and Jharkhand region,'' as per the latest figures Mahendra Singh Dhoni had paid the highest amount of Advance tax individually''.

Dr Sinha, however, refused to divulge the exact figure.

Further elaborating, the Chief Income Tax Commissioner said while the corporate tax collection this year had gone up by over 100 per cent, the individual tax collection also did not lag far behind and registered nearly 40 per cent growth since March last year to Rs 1,064.64 crores. Issuing a stern warning to both corporate and individual defaulters, Dr Sinha said in accordance with new directives serious offenders and deliberate defaulters might face long jail term and their property might be attached by the department for failing to pay taxes on time.

Referring to the number of raids for search and seizure operations by I T officials in Bihar and Jharkhand, Dr Sinha said a total of 12 major raids had been conduced during this fiscal compared to only five last year.

During the same period as many as 83 arrest warrants had been issued compared to 66 last year, he said adding that in terms of taxes a total amount of Rs 7.04 crores, compared to Rs 6.06 crores, had so far been collected during 2007-08.

A total amount of Rs 70.40 crores had also been disclosed during the current fiscal compared to Rs 13.40 crores last year,the CITC pointed out.

About the position twoards TDS collection in Bihar and Jharkhand this year, Chief TDS Commissioner Ujjal Choudhury said they had recorded about 60 per cent growth in collection to Rs 1583 crores compared to Rs 1386 crores last year.

The special emphasis towards collection from the central government and public sector employees in the two states had paid rich dividends, he said and emphasised to continue the programme in the coming years too.

Eight more centres had also been set up in different parts of the two states to ensure smooth collection of taxes, he said and urged the asseses to comply with the latest directives to avoid stern action both at corporate and individual level.
