Matthew William Short is an Australian batting all-rounder. Also known as Matt, who plays all formats of domestic cricket, was born on November 08, 1995, in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. Short was selected for the nation's under-19 side for the 2014 World Cup in the UAE. Significantly, he was the second-highest run-scorer for his team with 237 points from 6 games at an average of 39.50. Australia finished fourth at the tournament after losing in the semis to England.
Short has been outstanding since the start of his List A career and has earned appreciation. Short made his first-class debut against the New Zealand in a three-day match in October 2015. His maiden first-class century, 134 not out, came for Cricket Australia XI against England in Townsville during a tour match in mid-November 2017.
In Big Bash League, Short played six seasons for Melbourne Renegades since debut in 2014. He has been a vital member of Adelaide Strikers 2018 onwards with his ever-persistent performances. He was moved from the middle order to the opener spot and finished the season with the second-most sixes (26) and third-most runs (493).
Short also got a chance to serve as a stand-in captain of the franchise in 2023 following Peter Siddle's absence due to injury. Additionally, on January 5, 2023 he scored his first century in the BBL, scoring 100* from just 59 balls as Strikers recorded biggest run chase of 230 runs. Short was named Player of the Tournament at the end of the season for his 458 runs and 11 wickets.
Short is yet to make his IPL debut as Punjab Kings signed him as an injury replacement for Jonny Bairstow in the 2023 season. Short was signed by the Punjab franchise for his base price of INR 20 lakh after he went unsold at the 2023's mini auction.
