In the world of English cricket, new prospects are continually emerging, but few have made as immediate and striking an impact as Angus Alexander Patrick Atkinson, Gus Atkinson. Born on January 19, 1998, Atkinson has quickly risen through the ranks to become a pivotal player for Surrey and now, a burgeoning star in international cricket.
He made a striking entry into first-class cricket on August 8, 2020, when he debuted for Surrey in the Bob Willis Trophy. Just a few weeks later, on August 28, he made his Twenty20 debut in the 2020 T20 Blast. Building on his impressive starts, he then went on to make his List A debut on July 22, 2021, during the Royal London One-Day Cup.
The right-arm fast bowler joined the Oval Invincibles for the season of The Hundred, a 100-ball cricket tournament in 2022. His performances were instrumental in Surrey going all the way to win the 2022 County Championship. Recognising his impact, the Oval Invincibles retained him for the 2023 season.
2023 marked a huge milestone in his cricketing career. On September 18, he secured a multi-year contract extension with Surrey, underscoring his value to the team. In the same year, he received his first senior England call-up for the ODI and T20I series against New Zealand. He made his T20I debut on September 1, 2023, against New Zealand, where he registered impressive bowling figures of 4/20, the best figures by an English bowler on a T20I debut.
His remarkable summer performances earned him a spot in the England squad for the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023 in India. He continued to showcase his potential at the highest level in England's crucial match against Pakistan where he claimed the wicket of Babar Azam.
Gus Atkinson was acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 1 crore at the IPL 2024 auction held in December 2023. He was set to make his IPL debut with KKR but he preferred to withdraw from the tournament.
