Matthew Scott Wade is an Australian cricketer, who represents the national team as a wicket-keeper and batsman in all cricket formats. The southpaw - who was born on December 26, 1987 in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia - played cricket and Aussie Rules football till he was 19 years old. Reportedly, Wade is colour blind and even endured testicular cancer and survived it.
Wade made his major breakthrough and came into the limelight by representing Australia in the 2006 U-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka. He then went on to represent Tasmania in one List A match before moving to Victoria for the 2007–08 cricket season.
He soon established himself as the state's top wicket-keeper, surpassing Adam Crosthwaite. He left a strong impression when he contributed significantly to Victoria's win with 96 runs against Queensland during the Sheffield Shield final in the 2009–10 season.
Wade's consistently good performance and explosive batting style soon won him a maiden spot in the Australian T20I team during the tour of South Africa in late 2011. He, however, didn't get a chance to play during the series.
Wade's international debut eventually came in February 2012 in a T20I match against India in Sydney. He made it memorable by winning the Man of the Match award as he scored 72 runs off just 43 balls.
Wade's continuously stellar performances in the T20Is opened doors for the Australian ODI squad for the 2011–12 Commonwealth Bank Series. He once again was awarded the Man of the Match against India, scoring 67 runs off 69 balls.
Notably, he led Australia as stand-in captain in place of injured Steve Smith for the ODI series against New Zealand in 2017.
When it comes to IPL, Wade was first bought by Delhi Daredevils in 2011 and played only 3 matches in that season. Since then, he was not part of the IPL tournament until he was signed by the Gujarat Titans in 2022.
Matthew Wade tied the knot with Julia Barry in 2013 after courtship for 10 years. The couple has two adorable daughters.
